My sister, the youngest of Mama and Daddy's four girls, with whom I've shared a home for the last four years, gently passed from this life this afternoon just before 2:00. I was on one side, holding her hand and stroking her hair, while Michael (a/k/a Middle Son) was on the other, softly singing the Counting Crows' "A Long December". She was a quiet soul but tough as nails, and her travel in this world was not always easy. The nobility with which she braved the ravages of cancer was an inspiration. She was loved, and she will be missed. 'Night, Bel.

I'm glad you were able to be there for her til the end. If we've got to go--and rumor has it we do--going quietly surrounded by loved ones and a beautiful song sounds like the way to do it.

My condolences, though, because I know it's never easy.

Oh, my goodness gracious, y'all. I posted this and crashed. My amazing son, Michael (they're all amazing but he raised the bar yesterday) spent the night and took over the computer from that point on. I'm just now checking back in. I'm a lucky one to have so many sweet people thinking of me. It will be later before I can answer each of you, but, Kim, it's okay to sign me out blog-city on your computer. Adrastos, I take no responsibility for anything she may have said as me since August! Yikes!

Y'all are so wonderful. I've worked today, and am doing okay, but lose it from time to time, fearful that I never told her how brave I thought she was. I'm so sad, and prone to beating myself up. I know I could have taken better care of her at the very end. It's so easy to forget what needs doing. I came so close to doing this right. Even knowing there are no do-overs and focusing on trying to avoid regret, I don't think I necessarily succeeded. *sigh*

We have an extra Lisa here. I know LisaB & LisaPal, but am wondering if just plain Lisa is who I think it might be. Is that you, Best Friend, commenting on my blog for the first time?

We'll never forget the time she grilled hot dogs in the pouring rain on my 41st birthday for a crowd of 20 or so. We will never forget Bel. She is always in our hearts.

I'm blown away by this amazing support. It's been a blur. I went back to work Wednesday, having missed so much during Bel's last weeks and just feeling the need for some routine. In addition, Mama has been in a rapid decline & when I'm not at work, I've been with her. I will never get each one of you personally thanked, but please know how much it means to me. I'd like to thank Liprap for the sweet voicemail and Kim for the text message. I'll call you both this weekend. KJ, I hope you feel better soon and perhaps can join us on Saturday evening when we gather in Bel's honor. I'll email the details.

She was so brave. I wish I'd told her how brave I thought she was.

I have great empathy with you having similarly lost a sister. Its hard and i think of my sister daily and in my deep sorrow talk to her over the years. My sister inspired me to try to be a better person and I'm sure your sister will inspire you. i have to stop here cause I'm in tears. JWL

It's never easy. The love and memories you shared will always warm you and keep your sister near. So many die alone and so many families are not close, you gave your sister a peace that no one else could. I'm so sorry for your loss. Best wishes for you and your lovely family.

I'm so sorry to hear this but as others have said the loving hand of family was with her to the end and while it seemed a great burden to you, it was because of the great burden you lifted from her as she traveled home. Peace to you all.

Sweet people, I haven't fallen off the earth, or forgotten about you. I apologize for not having answered each of you personally, as is my preference, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sweet words. I have been bedsitting Mama in the final stages of hospice, sleeping on a roll away bed in a skilled nursing room of her assisted living community while my sister, Kathy & her husband do the heavy lifting of going through all the things in her apartment upstairs. It's hard to believe that Mama and Bel are going to pass so close together. It's midnight, Friday morning, that would have been Bel's 53rd birthday. Mama's time is short.

I've not had internet access until today. My dear friend PR has lent to me his Sprint card. He can't know how grateful I am. Thank you, PR.
